Round 2 excitements

I could only competently comment on a few games last night (not that I was incompetent, just otherwise engaged!).

My game vs Mitch took some twists, with Mitch first sac’ing a Knight for a pawn, then I thought I could grab a pinned pawn, but his threat on the pinning piece meant I had to return the piece for a pawn, leaving me a pawn up. Mitch then had the better position and he could have repeated checks for a draw, but he pressed on but the incorrect move order meant I had RNB vs 2 rooks. A discovered check left an unprotected R available for me, to end the game in my favour.

George vs Paul alternated between looking better for George, then for Paul, then for George again. It got down to George’s K+5P vs K+6P. But then a pawn promotion  race developed so the piece balance was George’s K+Q+P vs K+Q. But a series of checks by Paul meant George could not move away from the pawn or also risk an X-ray check that would win his Q. So a draw was agreed.

In Marco vs Daniel was interesting. Marco got his pieces in a knot while Daniel found good squares and doubled his rooks down the C file and placed a N on C2 that annoyed Marco. This led to loose play and other mistakes.

John will publish a separate post about the round 3 draw.

Welcome to our newest players

We started the 1st round of our handicap event and we had 5 new faces, which was just great! So a big welcome to Jessica, Daniel, Mitch, Theodore and Aaron – I am sure they will pose our established members a few problems in future. It was also good to see Roy back again from the blitz event. Remember to ‘follow’ the site to get updates delivered to your mailbox.

Some of our regulars had a first round bye, but we still had 16 players. Being a handicap event, anyone can do well in this. We now enter the mysterious twilight world where handicap points are the real currency for winning the event.

As this is a 7 round event, our unrated players should get a rating in the June lists.

Wilton Community Chess Club

This is a piece of unashamed cross-site promotion. The Wilton Community Chess Club  meets 9am Sunday during school terms: our closest chess club, located in Bingara Gorge estate, off Picton road near the M31 highway. The aim is to “build community one game at a time”. The Wilton area is going to see a population explosion in a few years, with already 500 residents in the new estate. So all ages and experience levels are wanted, and BYO chess set if you have it, or drop in for morning tea!

The final round of our first swiss for 2015 had 6 people in the running for a top 3 finish. Only 4 games were played last night due to a few forfeits. However, the games were all interesting:

Final round commentary:
The Steve v Robert game was not in the running for a place in the event, and Robert played a Nimzo-Indian defence and left Steve with doubles c pawns. Robert finally took one of these pawns and that was his undoing with exposed Q threats losing a Rook.

My game against Paul finished first with a win for myself. Paul thought at one stage that he could sac a R for N+2P but it turned out only N+1P. It ended with me a R v B and the pawns equal. And so this meant the other 2 games in the running for an equal 1st place had to find a win.

The Mike vs George game started as a Ruy Lopez and went down familiar paths for a bit. It got interesting when Mike sac’ed a N on g7 but George also counter-saced on e4. This left them both with Q and 2R then just Q+R each and scattered pawns. Mike grabbed a distant pawn with his Q and George could just then repeat Q checks for a draw.

John S v John M then had the only chance to catch me for first place. John S had more pawns in a R+B ending, but the pawn count dwindled under time pressure, with John M also threatening a checking repetition. They ended with just R+P v R and agreed the draw.

So 2 games that looked like there was to be a result ended as draws, creating a 4-way tie for second place.

Next week we start the Handicap tournament – see calendar for details.

The round 4 results means that the final round of our first swiss for 2015 will have many people in the running for a top 3 finish.

Round 4 commentary:
The George vs John S game showed a lot of promise, with each creating threats and counter threats, but in the end John defended well, ending with opposite coloured bishops and a draw.

John M and Mick seemed to go through the motions of a french defence and had a quiet draw.

John Rep was getting on top of Marco, but Marco started creating mating net threats around John’s king and John thought too long about it and lost on time.

John Rob vs Antoni ended up with each promoting a pawn, but John managed to convert his extra pawns into a win.

Vincent played a good game against Paul, ending up with K+R vs K+B+2P in a very drawish ending. However Vincent positioned his King badly, allowing Paul to sneak a pawn home for the win.

For my game against Robert, I launched a kingside attack while Robert pieces were slightly away from the defence. One poor move allowed me to open up the position and my Q, R and B did the rest.
